I lived in Newmarket Ontario with my son when this happened. We moved into an old house
that was broken up into apartments. The main entrance accessed the stairs to a second floor apartment and three other doors.
Two of the doors were apartments the third was a basement door. The basement had two separate areas. The door in our entrance
had slide bolt on it which was kept locked, this went down to a storage area. The other end of the basement had an apartment
that had an outside entrance. My son and I took an apartment on the first floor. Things went along and we settled in. I became
friends with the people who had the other apartment on the main floor and with the people upstairs. It was a big house with
lots of people so even if I was home alone I didn't feel as thought I was alone. At least that is what I put it down to at
the time.
Everything was fine, until one night when my son was staying over at his grandmothers house.
I went to a superbowl party with my boyfriend. When I left the apartment I turned on the living room light and locked the
door on my way out. The light switch in the living room is across the room from my apartment door so I leave it on if I'm
out at night so I can see when I first come in.
When I returned home I entered the building and walked towards my door. I saw the light
shinning out from under the crack of my apartment door and heard the neighbours upstairs talking and having a good time. As
I unlocked the door and opened it as quick as a blink the living room was in darkness. I noticed the bathroom light was now
on and watched the bathroom door slowly close till it was just opened a crack. I stood there totally stunned taking everything
in. Panic set in as I realized someone had broken in and was still in there! I shut my apartment door and bolted for the stairs.
Upstairs I pounded on their door. I could hear them inside but they wouldn't answer the door. I ran back downstairs and outside,
afraid the person inside might come running out and grab me. As I ran to the next door neighbours house, I passed by my bedroom
window. The bedroom shade was open and I could see it was pitch black inside, no light at all. Next door the neighbours were
out but a babysitter answered the door. He didn't know me and wouldn't let me in to use the phone. I told him what happened
and asked him to keep an eye on the front entrance of the apartment while I went to a pay phone to call the police. If the
intruder left while I was gone hopefully the babysitter could provide a description.
I ran to the street going passed my bedroom window again and noticed that the shade was
pulled down. It looked like someone was holding the shade away from the window a bit to peek out. Who ever it was must be
watching me! I ran to the local coffee shop and phoned the police and they said they would send a unit out right away. I called
my boyfriend and told him what had happened. He tried to calm me down and said he would be right there.
When I arrived back at the house my boyfriend was already there. He had a weird look on
his face and I figured he must have been just as rattled about the situation as I was. The police arrived then so we didn't
have a chance to talk. The police checked the through the house. No windows had been broken and they were still locked from
the inside. They even check through the basement area. The bolt was still closed so I figured no one could be down there.
They would have to leave the lock open to go down and close the door behind them. The search turned up nothing, no answers
at all. After the police left my boyfriend told me what had happened to him.
When he arrived he went into the main entrance and called out to whoever was in my apartment
that they had better come out because the police had been called. There was no response but he noticed the light was shining
out from under the door. Within seconds of him demanding whoever was in there to come out a piece of unopened mail shot out
from under the door and went flying across the hallway. He told me he actually thought I was inside and was playing a joke
until he saw me come back from the pay phone. So who had been in there and where did they go? How could they get out? Another
question popped up in my mind. How could the mail possibly shoot across the hall from under my door? The apartment floor is
at a bit of a lower level than the hallway floor so if you tried to push mail under the door it would get jammed. I had no
idea how any of this was possible but I knew I was not staying there that night!
The following day I talked to my neighbour about what happened and she started to laugh.
She informed me that the upstairs neighbours had been away for the past two weeks. She said I had been given a pretty rough
introduction to the ghosts. The ghosts? As she explained all the glasses in her cupboard started to rattle. This scared the
heck out of me and I looked at her in shock. She smiled and said: "Oh there's one now." "It's just on it's way upstairs."
About a week later the upstairs neighbours arrived home. I told them what had happened and
they confirmed they weren't home. She told me that at night when her husband and she were in bed they could hear whispering,
very fast and many voices. It seemed to come through the walls. She said it was kinda freaky and kind of annoying at the same
time. She said they had also heard someone go into their fridge, take out a can of pop or beer and crack it open. They figured
there must have been a few deaths in the house and that whoever these people were they had stayed.
